Old Orchard Beach, Maine, is a gem on the New England coastline, known for its seven-mile stretch of sandy shores, classic pier, and vibrant atmosphere. John and I are so lucky to have lived at Pine Point Beach in Scarborough, Maine and to be able to travel there frequently. This August we will be just south of Old Orchard Beach in Saco, Maine for two weeks. We are looking forward to booking some engagement sessions and family/portrait sessions during some of our evenings there!
As a photographer, I find this location to be an endless source of inspiration and an ideal setting for a variety of photography sessions. Whether you’re a family looking to capture summer memories, a couple wanting a romantic backdrop, an engagement or maternity session - Old Orchard Beach has something for everyone!
The magic of sunset here is one of the most enchanting aspects of Old Orchard Beach. The sunsets behind the beach, can create a warm, golden glow that enhances portraits with a magical touch. Plus, the sun setting behind the amusement park just highlights its charm even more! The Pier and Palace Play Land amusement park are iconic landmarks that add character and charm to any photo. The pier, with its rustic wooden planks and lively atmosphere, is a fantastic backdrop for both candid and posed shots. The amusement park, with its colorful rides and neon lights, offers a whimsical and fun setting, especially for evening sessions when the lights come alive. We also have a perfect spot just down the road at the Pine Point boat launch where we can capture the sun setting over the marsh rather than the pier if you prefer the quiet peace of nature.
The wide beach provides ample space for group photos, and the relaxed, fun environment helps everyone feel at ease, resulting in natural, joyful images. It also offers countless romantic spots. Stroll hand-in-hand along the water’s edge, share a moment under the pier, or enjoy a quiet moment with the ocean as your backdrop. The gentle waves and expansive sky create a sense of intimacy and serenity that is perfect for engagement, maternity or anniversary shoots. The mix of natural and urban elements allows for creative compositions. Capture the essence of summer on the beach, or explore the nearby arcades and shops for more dynamic, candid shots.

Practical Tips for Your Session

1. Timing: For the best lighting we schedule your session during golden hour - late afternoon/evening is the best - even better that one hour leading into sunset. Midday sun can be harsh - especially at the wide open beach. It can also be crowded not allowing enough space under the pier for more intimate shots.
2. Weather: We check the weather forecast frequently! Coastal weather can change quickly - a slightly overcast sky can provide perfect lighting so don't worry if it's a cloudy day. There might even be less people on the beach. Flexibility is key in your schedule should there be a wash out on your scheduled day.
3. What to Wear: Dress comfortably and in colors that complement the beach setting. Soft pastels, whites, and light blues tend to work well.
4. Permits: While Old Orchard Beach is public, some areas, especially around the pier, may require permits for professional photography. It's always best to check with local authorities. (We've never had to but it's best to be prepared).
5. Props and Accessories: Beach balls, kites, blankets, and even vintage beach chairs can add a personal touch to your sessions and help children feel more comfortable.
